Abstract

In the Laws, Plato states that the gods have given choruses their name by derivation from the joy (chara) that is natural to them and that any man without choral expertise (achoreutos) should be considered uneducated (apaideutos). Through a reading of some passages of this Platonic dialogue, that describes the foundation of a new colony in Crete named Magnesia, the seminar seeks at reconstructing the importance of mousike in ancient Greek education and public life, focusing on chorality and on the changes occurring in fourth-century music culture.
