The program explores and interprets the Palaeolithic archaeology of Lesbos. To this end interdisciplinary investigations comprising surface survey, excavation, geoarchaeological and geophysical research are conducted by an international team at the Kalloni Gulf and south Lesbos. Since 2012 systematic excavations at Rodafnidia-Lisvori, a Lower Palaeolithic open-air site, yield evidence of hominin activity in a Middle Pleistocene fluvio-lacustrine setting. The main finds are unique Acheulean artifacts (Large Cutting Tools such as handaxes, trihedral and cleavers) that connect the early archaeology of the Aegean to that of Africa and Eurasia.
