Objectives

The Laboratory of Papyrology and Epigraphy was officially established in 1998. According to the Laboratory's statutes and by-laws, the primary goal is teaching and researching in the fields of Papyrology and Epigraphy. The members of the Laboratory offer undergraduate courses and seminars on Papyrology and Epigraphy on a regular basis.
The Laboratory also welcomes mutual collaboration with colleagues, Institutes and Universities in Greece and abroad that share common interests.


Topics

• The members of the Laboratory offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses and seminars on Papyrology and Epigraphy on a regular basis.
• The Laboratory΄s members deliver two-hour lectures on ancient writing materials in antiquity (papyrus, ostraca, tablets, parchment) to many Primary, Secondary and High Schools in Rethymnon, Chania and Herakleion, Crete.
• Archaeological excavations in Egypt.
• Editions of texts (documentary and literary), which were preserved in ancient materials (papyri, ostraca, tablets, inscriptions etc.).

  • School for making squeezes of ancient inscriptions: In the frame of the Seminar Ancient Greek Epigraphy of the Department of Philology during the Spring Semester 2014-2015 under the instruction of Nikos Litinas, a school for making squeezes of ancient inscriptions was organized in the site of Fortezza, Rethymnon, Crete in May 11, 2005, with the participation of undergraduate students, after permission given by the Department of Philology and the 25th Antiquities Service. Each student took a turn by repeatedly beating the wet special paper (bought and provided by the Department to the students) with a special brush until every incision of the inscription was reproduced in order to indicate the size and the depth of carved letters, and to capture a negative impression of a carved inscription.

  • June 7, 2014: In the frame of the Seminar Ancient Greek Epigraphy of the Department of Philology during the Spring Semester 2013-2014, under the instruction of Nikos Litinas, the undergraduated students visited the site of the Ancient Gortyna, in order to see "the Queen of the legal inscriptions", the earliest law code preserved in Europe, as well as other inscriptions kept in the store room of the ancient site.

Collaborations/ Affiliations

  • January 2016. Cooperation between the University of Sohag, Egypt, and the University of Crete (Laboratory of Papyrology and Epigraphy) concerning scientific and technical issues in the fields of Papyrology and Epigraphy.
  • Because of the cooperation between the University of Michigan and the Laboratory of Papyrology and Epigraphy in the frame of the Project APIS, Nikos Litinas took over the publication of papyrus fragments kept in the Michigan Collection.
