Stella Giakoumaki

Stella Giakoumaki is Professor of Clinical Neuropsychology in the Department of Psychology, University of Crete and Director of the University of Crete Research Centre for the Humanities, the Social and Education Sciences. Since September 2018 until September 2022 she is the Chair of the Department of Psychology. She completed her studies and training in the University of Crete and Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College, London. Her research interests focus on the study of endophenotypic markers in individuals at increased risk for schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Her research work has been published mainly in international peer-reviewed journals, it has received high-impact indices, it has been funded by several funding bodies and has been awarded with international and national awards. Her teaching includes a significant number of undergraduate and postgraduate courses on Neuropsychology.

Melina Tamiolaki

Melina Tamiolaki  is Associate Professor of Ancient Greek Literature at the University of Crete (Department of Philology) and Affiliated Researcher at IMS/FORTH. She specializes in ancient Greek historiography, ancient Greek political thought and Xenophon, in particular. She has edited (and/or co-edited) 8 collective volumes, she has published numerous papers in journals and conference proceedings mainly in English and French, while some of her studies have also been translated, upon invitation, into Spanish and German. She has supervised and mentored a multitude of students at all levels (undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral). Her monograph Freedom and Slavery in Classical Greek Historians (Paris, Presses Universitaires Paris-Sorbonne, 2010) won the Zappas Award of the Association for the Encouragement of Ancient Greek Studies of France (2011). Melina Tamiolaki’s research has been funded by several institutions (such as the CHS/ Harvard, Princeton University, DAAD, the States Scholarship Foundation (IKY), the Research Committee of the University of Crete, the Foundation for Education and European Culture (IPEP, Athens), and the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation-ELIDEK).  

She is a member of the Advisory Board of Kallion, a non-profit organisation whose mission is to highlight the role of Humanities in modern leadership issues (www.kallion.org); in the framework of this collaboration, she has been co-organizing, together with Professor Jeff Beneker, the International Camp for Democratic Leadership (2020, 2021: online; 2022: to be held in Rethymnon: http://kallion.org/courses/international-camp-for-democratic-leadership-2021/). Over the last years, Melina Tamiolaki has developed an interest in the manifold ways by which digital methods and tools can enhance research in Classical Studies (and Humanities, more broadly) and also strengthen their role in modern societies. In July 2021 she was elected Deputy Director of the UCRC (University of Crete Research Center for the Humanities, Social Sciences and Sciences of Education-KEME).

Eleni Katsarou

Eleni Katsarou is Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, Department of Philosophy and Social Studies, University of Crete. Her research interests focus on Curriculum Development, Educational Action Research, (multi)literacies, critical (digital, media) literacy, multimodality, students’ voice, students as auto-ethnographers, Knowledge Democracy in school. She has more than 25 years of experience on more than 15 action research projects. She is Principal investigator in two research projects funded by the EU (one Erasmus+ and one ESPA) and partner in another two Erasmus+ Project during the last 5 years. She is Supervisor in 2 finished PhDs and 3 running now, as well as 22 finished master dissertations and 2 running now.

Evangelos C. Karademas, PhD, FEHPS

Since 2004, Evangelos Karademas is a faculty member at the Department of Psychology, University of Crete (currently a Professor of Clinical Health Psychology). Between 2004 and 2014 he served as the Chair of the University of Crete Counselling Center for Students, as well as the Chair of the Department of Psychology from 2012 to 2014. Since 2020 Evangelos is the Director of the Laboratory of Applied Psychology, University of Crete. He is a member of the editorial board in six international and two Greek journals, as well as an Associated Editor in two journals. He is an Honorary Fellow and currently the President of the European Health Psychology Society (2020-2022). Since 2017, he is a research affiliate at the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (Institute of Computer Science). He has authored one book, edited six more, and published more than 130 scientific articles and chapters in international and local journals and editions. His research interests include the role of stress in health and illness, self-regulation, dyadic regulation and health, adaptation to chronic illness, and well-being.

Marina Tzakosta

Marina Tzakosta is Professor of Language Development and Pedagogy of the Preschool Child at the Department of Preschool Education of the University of Crete. Her scientific interests focus on the development of mother languages, the teaching and learning of second languages, language difficulties, language contact and language change, orthography learning and teaching, dialectology and the teaching of dialects.

She holds a BA and a MA in linguistics and phonological development from the Department of Philology of the University of Crete (1996, 1999). She received her Ph.D. from the University of Leiden Center for Linguistics with a scholarship granted by the Dutch State (2004). During her Ph.D. studies she was a visiting student at the Department of Linguistics, Umass/Amherst. Her postdoc research on the development of Greek morphology by second language learners of Greek was financed by the Greek State Scholarships Foundation (2005-2006) and was carried out the Department of Philology of the University of Patras. Except from the Department of Preschool Εducation of the University of Crete, she has taught at the Department of Philology/ University of Patras, the Department of Philology/ University of Crete, the Department of Mediterranean Studies/ University of the Aegean.

She has published more than 100 studies in national and international journals, edited volumes and conference proceedings, 7 books and edited volumes and 3 educational materials. She has participated in more than 20 research projects as a principal investigator or research associate. Representatively, in 2014 she was awarded a highly competitive grant by the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation in order to create the Digital Museum of Greek Oral History (MOHI), a pool of dialectal data and local history (www.mohi.edc.uoc.gr). She has also been a visiting scholar at the Stanley Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies/ Princeton University in 2018. She is currently a member of the team which is in charge of the training of preschool teachers and English language instructors regarding the introduction of English in Preschool Εducation (2021-2022).

Vassilis Arapoglou
Professor, Department of Sociology

BSc Economics (Athens), MSc Urban & Regional Development (Athens), MSc Social Policy (LSE), PhD Geography and Environment (LSE). He is professor in Urban Sociology, social inequalities and exclusions at the department of sociology of the University of Crete and tutor in European studies at the Greek Open University. His research and teaching concentrates on the critical analysis of urban social inequalities, residential segregation, migration and social integration policies in European and North American cities.

Anastassios MATSOPOULOS, Ph.D (State University of New York, USA)

Professor Matsopoulos is a permanently certified school psychologist in New York State, US since 1991 and has worked as full time school psychologist at the Schalmont School District, Schenectady, New York. He has taught as full-time Professor at The College of St. Rose, NY and the Psy.D. of the Fairleigh Dickinson University in NJ, US. (1997-2001). Since 2002, is a tenured Assistant Professor of School Psychology at the University of Crete (Greece), Depart. of Preschool Education. He is the Director/Scientific Coordinator of School Psychology Research Unit at the University of Crete Research Center (UCRC). Prof. Matsopoulos has extensive experience with European programs experience. He has participated in the following European programs as scientific coordinator for the University of Crete:

• Erasmus + RESCUR 2012-2015 Resilience Curriculum “Surfing the Waves”
• Erasmus +ENRETE (2016-2018) “Enhancing Resilience in Teacher Education”
• Horizon2020 RECRIRE (2015-2018) The Representation of the Crisis and the Crisis of the Representation.
• Horizon2020 Rayuela-Empowering and Educating young people for the Internet (2021-2023) in collaboration with Ellinogermaniki Agogi.

Professor Matsopoulos has been the external quality assurance executive evaluator for European Project P.R.E.P.E.I which was coordinated by the Smile of the Child (2019).The School Psychology Research Unit has signed a MOU with NGO the Smile of the Child (2016-2018) and Prof. Matsopoulos has provided training and supervisor of psychologists in the school prevention programs. Also, the School Psychology Research Unit has signed an MOU with the European School of Hrakleion, Crete for years 2021-2024.

Dr. Matsopoulos’ scholarly interests are focusing on prevention science, resilience, parent training, teacher consultee-centered consultation, early intervention and international school psychology. Also Dr. Matsopoulos has published in school readiness and preschool children as well as teacher evaluation.

Dr. Matsopoulos is a co-author of the “RESCUR-Surfing the Waves: A Resilience Curriculum for Early Years and Primary Schools”. He has co-edited with Prof. Suniya Luthar a special issue “Parents, caregivers, educators: The forgotten stakeholders in the discussion of Resilience_An international perspective (2020). His latest book is entitled Growth Resilience Ecosystemic Consultation (G.R.E.CO) for Teachers (2022).

Since 2017, Dr. Matsopoulos is the Co-Chair of the International School Psychology Association interest group “Parent Education and Family Resilience”. In the last 30 years, Dr. Matsopoulos has trained school psychologists, teachers and preschool teachers in countries such as Latvia, Canada, Cyprus, Greece, Italy and USA. In addition, Dr. Matsopoulos has been working as international consultant to research projects in India, Peru and Brazil.  Finally, he is the Acting President of the Hellenic School Psychology Association-HASP (2021). Professor Matsopoulos has been included on the international documentary “Freedom Beseiged” directed by Panagiotis Giannikos (2017).

Maria Kousis

(MA, PhD, The University of Michigan, 1984) is Professor of Sociology and Director of the University of Crete Research Centre for the Humanities, the Social and Education Sciences (UCRC). She was coordinator or partner in 9 European Commission research projects since 1994, including Grassroots Environmental Action, TEA, PAGANINI and MEDVOICES. Publications include 16 edited volumes/books/special issues and more than 80 articles/book chapters, such as Economic and Political Contention in Comparative Perspective Boulder (eds. M Kousis and C Tilly, Paradigm Publishers 2005), a Special Issue of American Behavioral Scientist on Alternative Action Organizations During Hard Economic Times: A Comparative European Perspective (eds M.  Nikos E. Papadakis

is Professor at the Department of Political Science, of the University of Crete. He is the Deputy Director of the UCRC, namely the University of Crete Research Center for the Humanities, the Social and Education Sciences. Additionally, he is the Director of the Centre for Political Research and Documentation (KEPET) at the Department of Political Science, while he is the Delegate- Coordinator of the University of Crete at the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network for Greece, (UN SDSN), and he is a Member of the SDSN Global. He is a Member of the Scientific Board of the National Centre of Public Administration and Local Government (EKDDA) of Greece. In addition he is a member of the ECPR Political Culture Research Network. He was, till recently, an International Expert at the ETF (“Skills & VET Governance” project/ 2015- 2018), while he was a Special Adviser to the European Commission (2011 -2013) and he has participated the European Commission Education & Training Coordination Group (ETCG/2006-2010). In addition, he was a member of the Advisory Board of the UNDP/ RCPAR (Regional Centre for Public Administration Reform/ 2008- 2011). He was a Visiting Professorial Fellow at the UCL- IoE (March 2012- August 2012) and a Visiting Professor at the Zhengzhou University (ZZU), in China (November 2019). Elena Anagnostopoulou

obtained her Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Salzburg in 1994. After a post-doc at MIT (1997-1998), where she returned in 2007 as a Visiting Associate Professor, she took a position at the University of Crete in 1998, where she is currently Professor of Theoretical Linguistics. Her research interests lie in theoretical and comparative syntax, formal linguistic typology, morphology and historical morphosyntax, with special focus on the interfaces between syntax, morphology, and the lexicon, argument alternations, Case, Agreement, person, gender, clitics, control and anaphora. In 2013 she received a Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany, in recognition of her past accomplishments in research and teaching. Since 2019 she is elected member of Academia Europaea. She is the author of The Syntax of Ditransitives. Evidence from Clitics (Mouton de Gruyter 2003), co-author of External Arguments in Transitivity Alternations. A Layering Approach (Oxford University Press 2015), has co-edited 3 collective volumes and 2 conference proceedings, and has published in journals, edited volumes and conference proceedings. Stavroula Tsinorema

is Professor of Modern & Contemporary Philosophy and Bioethics, Director of the Joint Postgraduate Programme in Bioethics (http://biothics.fks.uoc.gr) and Director of the Centre for Bioethics of the University of Crete. She has been the founding Director of the Centre for Philosophical Research and Translation of UC. She holds a First Class Honours Degree in Philosophy from the University of Athens, followed by M.A. in Moral and Social Philosophy and Ph.D. in Moral Philosophy from the University of Exeter. She has over sixty publications in moral and social philosophy, bioethics, epistemology, philosophy of language and philosophy of mind. She is the author of Language and Critique. Wittgenstein on Meaning, Knowledge and Values, Liberal Books, 2014; co-editor of Philosophy and the Many Faces of Science, Rowman and Littlefield Publishers, 1998; co-editor of Themes in Bioethics, Crete University Press, 2013. She is member of the Editorial Board of International Studies in the Philosophy of Science, and Deucalion: Biannual Journal for Philosophical Research and Critique, and has been holder of A.K. Mellon Foundation Fellowship (USA). She sits on the National Committee for Deontology for Clinical Trials at the National Organization for Medicines of the Ministry of Health. She heads the Research Ethics Committee of the University of Crete, and is member of the Committee on Bioethics and the Ethics of the Sciences, and the Committee on Human Rights, of Fédération Internationale des Sociétés de Philosophie. She is also member of the European Commission’s “Expert Group to advise on specific ethical issues raised by driverless mobility” (2019- ).

Vassilis Arapoglou

(B.Sc., M.Sc., PhD LSE). Associate professor in social inequalities and social exclusion at the department of sociology of the University of Crete and tutor in European studies at the Greek Open University. His research and teaching concentrates on the critical analysis of urban social problems, residential segregation, migration and social integration policies in European cities. He has served as editor and editorial board member of European Urban and Regional Studies. He is member of editorial board of the Social Atlas of Athens, the administrative board of the University of Crete Research Centre for the Humanities, the Social and Education Sciences (UCRC). He has also been visiting research fellow at the Hellenic Observatory- European Institute LSE (UK), the OpenSpace Research Centre (Open University UK), and research associate of the Greek National Centre for Social Research, the Labor Institute of the Greek National Confederation of Labor (Athens), the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research (Athens), the Immigration Policy Institute (Athens). Recent publications include a book on poverty and homelessness in Southern Europe published by Macmillan Palgrave and a theme issue on diversity in European cities in European Urban and Regional Studies.

Daphne Nicolitsas (4/2020 - 11/2021)

is, since Feb 2014, an Assistant Professor at the Department of Economics of the University of Crete. Prior to that she worked in economic policy related jobs and in the financial sector. During the period 2004-2014 Daphne worked (as a Deputy Director from 2010) in the Economic Research Department of the Bank of Greece. She was a Senior Economist at the Council of Economic Advisers in the Greek Ministry of Economics and Finance (1999-2001) and worked (Deputy Director of the Economic Analysis Division since March 2004) at Emporiki Bank. She also worked in the Research Division of Tudor Proprietary Trading in London (1997-98).  She has held research posts at the University of Manchester and the University of Oxford (1992-1997).

She holds a BA from the Athens University of Business and Economics, an MPhil from the University of Oxford and a Ph.D. from the University of Manchester. 

Her main research interests lie in labour economics and in industrial organization, fields in which she has publications in international journals. Currently she is leading an EU funded project, with partners from top EU Universities, on the structure and conduct of Employers’ Associations in the EU.

Konstantinos (Kostas) Kafetsios (9/2016 - 9/2019)

(PhD. Lancaster University, 1997) is, since September 2019, a Professor in Social Psychology at Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, and a Visiting Professor at the University of Crete, Psychology Department. He has held research and teaching positions at the School of Social and Political Sciences & the Centre for Family Research, University of Cambridge, the Psychology Department at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge and as a visiting Professor at Darmstadt University in Germany. Research work within his group focuses on the daily experience and emotion in social interaction, in hierarchical and social relationships across cultures. He is a first author or co-author in more than 70 publications in international peer-refereed journals and numerous publications in Greek. He is frequent ad hoc reviewer for more than 70 international journals and Grant funding agencies in the Social Sciences, a Consulting editor for Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (APA), an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Organizational Psychology, and previous Associate Editor for the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships (2010-2015). He is an Editorial Board member for the Personal Relationships, the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, and the Hellenic Journal of Psychology. As a PI or co-PI he has held several competitive research grants from several national and European funding agencies (EEA, H2020, the European Commission, IKY, DAAD).

Aspasia Chatzidaki

holds a BA in Greek Philology (University of Thessaloniki, Greece), an MA in Theoretical Linguistics (University of Reading, UK), and a Ph.D. in Sociolinguistics (Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium). Since 2000 she has been a faculty member of the Department of Primary Education of the University of Crete where she is currently Associate Professor of Bilingualism and Greek as a Second Language. She is also the Director of the Centre for Intercultural and Migration Studies of the same Department, which has implemented two major European-Union funded projects regarding Greek-language education in the Diaspora (1998-2008, 2011-2014, https: ediamme.edc.uoc.gr/diaspora, ediamme.edc.uoc.gr/ellinoglossi). Her research interests include the study of sociolinguistic and educational aspects of bilingualism as well as Greek as a second language both in Greece and in diasporic communities. In the past twenty years she has taken part in numerous educational intervention programmes and teacher capacity-building seminars regarding the education of immigrant and refugee students. Recently she co-edited a book on educational aspects of ‘new migration’ from Greece (Panagiotopoulou, A., Rosen, L., Kirsch, C. & Chatzidaki, A. (Eds) (2019) ‘New’ Migration of Families from Greece to Europe and Canada - A ‘New’ Challenge for Education? Berlin: Springer Verlag) and is preparing a collected volume on refugee education (Chatzidaki, A. & Tsokalidou, P. (to appear) Challenges and Initiatives in Refugee Education: the case of Greece. Dimitris Stavrou

is Professor of Science Education at the Department of Primary Education, University of Crete, Greece and the Director of the Science Teaching Laboratory in this Department. He has graduated the Chemistry Department at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and continued his post –graduate studies in Science Education in the Department of Primary Education in Athens and the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN) in Kiel, Germany. He was the Treasurer (2011 – 2015), the President (2015–2017) and is currently the Vice-President (2019 – 2021) of the Hellenic Association for Science Education and Information Communication Technologies (ENEPHET). He has been the principal investigator from the University of Crete of the FP7 Framework EU-Project “IRRESISTIBLE” (2013–2016) and the Erasmus+ project “IDENTITIES” (2019 – 2022) and is a member of the project team of MINT – Lernen in informellen Räumen [STEM – Learning in out of school contexts], PhD Program: University of Oldenburg, Germany (2016–2020). His research interests include the educational reconstruction of modern science topics (quantum mechanics, non-linear systems), in-service teachers training in teaching nanoscience and nanotechnology issues in school and out of school contexts as well as pre- and in-service teachers training in STEM teaching.
