Translation of G. Lukács, Die Theorie des Romans

The aim of the research program is to produce a scientifically edited translation of the classical treatise by Georg G. Lukács, Die Theorie des Romans (1st edition: 1920). The attempt to produce such a translation in the 1970s by Akmon Editions does not meet the standards of academic teaching, and does not even allow a plain reading and understanding of the text by those interested. A second attempt to produce a translation by Polytypo Editions in 2004 unfortunately presents even more severe problems. The Theory of the Novel influenced in many ways the development of an aesthetics of the novel, especially the relevant work produced by members of the Frankfurt School and by intellectuals in its periphery who had absorbed the book as soon as it appeared for the first time (Adorno, Marcuse, Leventhal, Kracauer, Benjamin, Goldmann, Janz, Bürger etc.). In spite of the criticism that some of Lukács’s views have received in the meanwhile, this is a classical text in the particular field, and an enjoyable reading.
